3 + Lbs!

I went in search of some healthy food for Juicing at the store today.  What I found was a 3 lb. bag of organic produce for $5.99 to put through my juicer!

This $5.99 bag of fruits and veggies made 32 ounces of juice!  That is 4 servings of organic goodness!  Healthy Living Market at Wilton Mall is the place. AND… they will make you a fresh bag with your preferences if you ask them to.  This bag was made while I waited a few minutes. It contained Kale, several Carrots of various colors, Celery Stalks, a Lemon, 2 Honeycrisp Apples, and Ginger root.  The juice was fabulous.

How to store your fresh juice

IMG_7265

Lately I have been making a few days worth of juice at a time. It saves me from cleaning my Champion every day. Some days I don’t have quite enough juice to fill the jars. (Juice stays fresh longer when there is no air in the jar.) An easy fix is to add ice cubes to top off the jar! It cools the juice faster and slows the oxidative process down.
Don’t forget to spoon off the foam first! Cause foam = air = oxidation.
Remember, a masticating juicer makes juice that can be stored for up to 72 hours, if in an airtight container and refrigerated.
A centrifugal juice’s juice needs to be consumed within 20 minutes, as the spinning action adds air to the juice and it starts oxidizing much faster.

How to buy a used Champion Juicer

Buying a Juicer should be a simple purchase. If you aren’t sure what type of juicer to buy, check out my blogpost on that topic.
If you decide to buy a Champion Juicer, here are some tips.
Buying new: The most affordable web price I have found is www.harvestessentials.com
Their price is $265 – plus they have a $10 coupon and free shipping.

That price can be steep.
Another option is to buy a used juicer.
Ebay always has juicers for sale.
Craigslist does also.

When buying a used Champion Juicer, make sure it has all of its parts
AND make sure that all of the parts are also shown disassembled.
I know two people who have purchased a used Champion with the cutter blade
stuck (more like cemented) on the motor shaft. This happens when the juicer was
either assembled when wet or not cleaned properly before being sold. It is nearly impossible to get the cutter to release from the motor shaft when this happens, making the juicer un-usable.

That being said, I know many people who have purchased used Champion juicers that worked perfectly and are like new.

The beauty of the Champion is that the model has stayed basically the same
over the years, and replacement parts are affordable. The motor has a 10 year
warranty and the product is made in the USA.
These juicers last for decades and are a great health investment.

Movie Link: Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead

I’ve been talking up this movie for a few years. And now that I am offering the Juicing for Weight Loss Program,
it’s coming up again. People want to change their habits and their health. Juicing can be the vehicle that does it for them,
and maybe for you as well.
This movie is what got me started on my juicing journey. Joe Cross is the film maker who documented his experience with juicing
and how he shared his experience with others. It’s a life changing story.

Juicing – Shop for healthy produce

The more that I juice, the more I realize how powerful Juicing is.

With that said, I want to juice the best possible produce I can find.
Gardening season makes it so easy. I know my own fruits and veggies don’t have any pesticides and aren’t grown with “frankenseeds”.

This Gift of Goodies arrived on my patio one day in July. My “garden angel” must have delivered it. #GRATEFUL

So, what does one do when it’s time to shop at the “indoor” stores again?

Purchase the healthiest food that’s available, and here’s how:

READ THE BARCODE ON THE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES:

* 4 digits: The fruit likely comes with a burden of poisons a and was grown in depleted soil.

* 5 digits, first is 8: This fruit is genetically modified, a GMO. It contains genes that were not put there by nature.

* 5 digits, first is 9: This fruit has been grown to an organic standard. Although the standard is not as strict as some produced by the most serious organic farmers, it is certainly superior to conventionally-grown or GMO fruit.

In a nutshell, pick 5 digits that start with a 9!

***BONUS RECIPE*** Enjoy this great recipe for relief of digestive discomfort. It uses lots of “seasonal” produce that’s available in the Fall. (Click on the picture to enlarge it.)

Juice on my Friends!

Is Juicing right for you?

Oh so many grapefruit to choose from!

Oh so many grapefruit to choose from!

The benefits of juicing are vast! Ask anyone who juices. If you are looking for a reason to juice, consider this:
Juicing heals! So many ailments including tiredness, insomnia, skin problems, immune dysfunction, weight issues to name a just a few. Who wouldn’t want to juice?
Actually… there are some contraindications to juicing. These include people being treated for cancer. And, people with diabetes need
a doctor’s approval. And pregnant women, and very young children.

Juicing is powerful stuff. One of my dear friends was being treated for breast cancer a few years ago, and her MD told her NO JUICING!
The juice would have detoxed the necessary chemotherapy right out of her body. She is now fully recovered, thank God.
(Epilogue: She did finally get the chemotherapy out of her body recently during a juice cleanse, but that’s another story.)

And, Juice has a lot of carbohydrates, therefore it should be used under a doctor’s supervision if you have diabetes.

Aside from these exceptions, juicing can be done by most of the population. For example, last week we taught a bunch of middle school-ers in Amsterdam, NY about juicing.
They LOVED it! It was their annual Wellness Day, and my good friend, Christine, invited us to come teach. The kids were so enthusiastic. Many said
they were going to ask for a juicer for their birthdays. Others said they had a juicer in the cupboard, but never saw it used. It was so exciting to
see their positive attitudes. No fear at all for them. My hope is that they can bring that enthusiasm home and get their parents juicing too.

Wouldn’t it be great to become so healthy that you don’t need those pills anymore? I have heard so many stories of people lowering their cholesterol, their
weight, their blood pressure. And all within the first 3 months of juicing. I can’t wait until doctors start recommending Juice instead of a prescription!

What Juicer Should I Buy?

What Juicer Should I Buy? I am asked this question almost daily. Truthfully, there is a lot to consider when buying a juicer. Here is some basic information. There are two common types: Centrifugal and Masticating.

Centrifugal juicers are sold in most stores these days. They are affordable, $50-300. I have seen them at Goodwill for $10.  Centrifugal juicers make juice by spinning the  produce at very high speeds. The juice is separated from the fiber with this action. Juice should be consumed within 20 minutes of making it to get it’s full nutritional value.  Centrifugal juicers make juice quickly without much labor. The food chute is generally, not always, large and whole apples can be put in it.  They can be more work to clean up than a masticating juicer.

Example of a masticating juicer

Here is my Champion juicer.

Masticating juicers are often sold at health food stores, but primarily purchased online. Price starts around $200 and can go up to $400. These juicers make juice by grinding the produce and squeezing the juice from the fiber. The motor turns a grinder at a fairly slow rate, which allows the cell wall of the fruit or vegetable to be broken open, thereby releasing maximum nutrition. Juice can be consumed up to 48 hours later with maximum nutritional value if refrigerated in an airtight glass container.  Masticating juicers do require more labor: pushing the produce through the chute takes some arm strength, and the chute is generally smaller. Apples, for example, must be quartered. These juicers are easier to clean up when finished juicing.

I once did an experiment with juicing the same amount of produce with both types of juicers. I did this at one of my classes.  We were amazed to find that the masticating juicer made 2X the amount of juice from the exact same amount of produce.

Buying a juicer is a personal decision.  This information is what I have learned from researching juicers and from teaching people about the benefits of juicing.

I offer Juicing for Wellness and Vitality classes periodically.  I have both types of juicers for the participants to use. People definitely have a preference of one juicer over the other after using both of them. See my Juicing Classes page for information about upcoming classes.

Feel free to write comments or questions. I hope this answered your questions.
